Pneumonia is an acute inflammatory condition that will produce increased blood flow, increase temperature in the airways, and secretions in the airways that would impart additional alcohol to a breath specimen as it passes over the airways contaminating the breath specimen with additional alcohol not representative of the blood alcohol level as it exchanges in the alveoli. Of course the use of an inhaler containing alcohol would be to further contamination of the breath specimen.
This respiratory illness, and the medication used to treat it, make the taking of an evidentiary breath sample useless as an indicator of blood alcohol level in this case.
