WHAT IS INTERNAL MEDICINE?
Internal Medicine is a medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. It includes the following sub-specialties and requires training in these sub-specialties.
1. Cardiology, dealing with the disorders of the heart and blood vessel.
2. Endocrinology dealing with disorders of the endocrine system and its specifics secretions called hormones,
3 Gastroenterology, concerned with the fields of digestive diseases.
4. Hematology, concerned with blood, the blood forming organs and its disorders.
5. Infectious Diseases, concerned with diseases caused by biological agents such as viruses, bacteria or parasites.
6. Medical Oncology, dealing with the chemotherapeutic treatment of cancer.
7. Nephology, dealing with the study of the function diseases of the kidney.
8. Pulmonology, dealing with diseases of the lungs and the respiratory tract.
9. Rheumatology, dealing with the diagnosis therapy of rheumatic diseases.
10. Adolescent Medicine.
11. Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology.
12. Critical care medicine.
13. Geriatric medicine.
14, Interventional cardiology.
15. Hospital medicine.
16. Sleep medicine.
17. Allergy and Immunology.
18. Sports medicine.
When I trained in internal medicine, neurology was also part of the program.
